Yes, this is a known bug.  The simple workaround is (AFAIR) to use
"make buildworld installworld DESTFIR=3D/path/to/jail" instead.

Only critical fixes are merged into the release branches, so it's
unlikely that this will be merged into RELENG_5_3.
