So I thought I'd answer it publically for all. AMD uses the InWin Q500 http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=570 with the internal 3" drive cage removed. This case has tons of room and even with the 3" drive cage removed there are still 5 drive bays left. This case is US$69.32 from http://www.pricetool.com/pr-In_Win_IW_Q500_IW-Q500_ATX_Full_Tower_Case?sp=gcm&tid=921103 If you want a shorter case, I have also installed both Tyan K8W (s2885) and MSI-9131 mobos into the Antec SX835II Performance Series II mid-Tower case http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=80843. For RELENG_4, in 32 bit mode, on the K8V + Athlon64 3200+, buildworld (on disk, no precaching or ramdisks etc) goes at about 12-13 minutes. The athlon64 FX-51 at home should go faster due to the dual memory channels for more bandwidth and the higher clock speed. However, I have not tried it with RELENG_4. I only use kernels under 5.x with lots of debugging compiled in, so I dont have any fair numbers for comparison. I'll do some more targeted benchmarks over the next few days. If you don't mind using the plain brown-box versions and p roviding your own power supply you can save quite a few $$$. :-) Speaking of Antec, I love the sonata.. Its the first respectably quiet case I've come across. Even the fans are mounted on rubber dampers, the power supply has a special temperature sensitive controller for fans and a special power supply lead to plug your case fans. When things heat up, it speeds up the case fans etc. Plus, its in a nifty piano-black box with blue LED "headlights" on the front. :-) I just wish they didn't punch holes in the side to let more sound out. :-( > >If you want a shorter case, I have also installed both Tyan K8W (s2885) > >and MSI-9131 mobos into the Antec SX835II Performance Series II mid-Tower > >case http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=80843. > >Again with the internal 3" drive cage removed. > > > >-- > >-- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) Cheers, -Peter -- Peter Wemm - peter@wemm.org; peter@FreeBSD.org; peter@yahoo-inc.com "All of this is for nothing if we don't go to the stars" - JMS/B5 From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 22 00:57:31 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8912616A4B3 for ; Wed, 22 Oct 2003 00:57:31 -0700 (PDT) Received: from canning.wemm.org (canning.wemm.org [192.203.228.65]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9E8C143F93 for ; Wed, 22 Oct 2003 00:57:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from peter@wemm.org) Received: from wemm.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by canning.wemm.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D01E2A8DA; Wed, 22 Oct 2003 00:57:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from peter@wemm.org) X-Mailer: exmh version 2.5 07/13/2001 with nmh-1.0.4 To: Adriaan de Groot In-Reply-To: <200310181409.29062.Adriaan de Groot <>> Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 00:57:30 -0700 From: Peter Wemm Message-Id: <20031022075730.8D01E2A8DA@canning.wemm.org> cc: amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FYI, I've switched my primary desktop to AMD64. I've also been struggling with things like #define unsigned int __u32; (a Linuxism) -- what's the default int size on FBSD-amd64? (I realize I could assemble the system, boot the 5.1 snapshot from David, and find out for myself, but that may take quite some time). > Marvel bought syskonnect. This is a 3com rebadged version. I'll just have to see what David's snapshot build does (besides panic under load, as described here earlier) and wait for the next build. The code needs to be patched to use va_copy(newap, oldap); which also copies the data structures that ap points to. On machines like i386, a va_list is an integral type. But on amd64, it is effectively a pointer to an invisible external structure that contains counters and pointers for the rather complicated amd64 function calling convention. Generally, most of these have already been identified by the powerpc folks on linux. There are some other tricks possible instead of using the relatively new va_copy(), what works for linux/powerpc generally works for amd64 as well. AMD has chosen Celestica to manufacture it for resale and relabeling by various white box server vendors. To the best of my knowledge this system has the *only* existing 4-CPU 84x motherboard. This is the ugly metal looking beast with four SCSI drive bays in the front, and three 500W power supplies in the rear. The Inquirer and The Register had photos of it back in April, May and June, but I haven't heard much since. Has anyone had a chance to play with one of these yet? The Chieftec Dragon has this problem while installing the motherboard (www.cs.kun.nl/~adridg/amd64/ for some otherwise uninteresting pics). And dammit, once I got the motherboard and all the stuff installed, it turns out the primary (parallel) IDE connector is broken. I've been working with David's snapshot ISO from a month ago, and it complains about all the USB ports, and also doesn't find the on-board 3com gigabit lan (the motherboard is a K8V). Is that, um, intentional? You could then run the FreeBSD/i386 CVSup. -- -- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Oct 25 02:51:07 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BFB5016A4BF for ; Sat, 25 Oct 2003 02:51:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (trang.nuxi.com [66.93.134.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0446943F3F for ; Sat, 25 Oct 2003 02:51:07 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (obrien@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h9P9p6JC090929; Sat, 25 Oct 2003 02:51:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h9P9p5Vb090928; Sat, 25 Oct 2003 02:51:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien) Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 02:51:05 -0700 From: "David O'Brien" To: SKU Message-ID: <20031025095105.GD89176@dragon.nuxi.com> References: <20030928164122.GA92089@palomine.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030928164122.GA92089@palomine.net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.1-CURRENT Organization: The NUXI BSD Group X-Pgp-Rsa-Fingerprint: B7 4D 3E E9 11 39 5F A3 90 76 5D 69 58 D9 98 7A X-Pgp-Rsa-Keyid: 1024/34F9F9D5 cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Buildworld times on a AMD64 processor X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 09:51:07 -0000 On Sun, Sep 28, 2003 at 12:41:22PM -0400, SKU wrote: > Second question: If you had to buy a couple of FreeBSD builder boxes for > building releases and testing only, which platform would you go with: Amd64 > or the Opteron? "AMD64" is the architecture, "Opteron" is an instance of that architecture. Perhaps you mean Athlon64 vs. Opteron? I moved my FreeBSD/i386 5-CURRENT compile box from an Athlon XP-2200+ to an Athlon64 3200+ (2.0ghz) machine and cut 14 minutes from the 'make world' time.
