You can't expect to boot with a 4.0-Stable kernel and a 4.0-Release system and have things be normal. At boot time select /kernel.old and then upgrade your system in the proper order. I'm not using the international version but a cvsup of stable from an hour ago compiles. Re-cvsup and don't install a new kernel until you get a good build world. When I first started paying attention to 4.0, the were telling people to do the buildworld, config-make a new kernel, boot to single user mode and finish your installworld. The reason for not doing the installworld first is to keep you from shooting yourself in the foot, i.e., the /kernel.old won't work either.
