Hmm.  Large installed base?

Which OS version, and on what CPU?  I've seen over 1000K/sec on NE2000 
clones doing PIO, (RTL8019, Accton 5332, etc.) and likewise on
memory-mapped SMC clones (NS83901, NS83905, etc), mostly it's 2.2 
variants that stick in my memory, and mostly on low-end pentium systems.
