If you're running X, nedit is a good editor that has several language modes including perl, and does just about everything else you might want from an editor. It's gentle on resources and quite easy to use without any prior study of docs. Just install the package or port, fire it up, and start editing. Later on you can explore the menus and then the docs to get the most out of it. I see you're using pine, so you must have its editor pico available too. If you want something else, try a few from the ports collection until you find one that has the feel you like.
