What did `file v' report, out of interest? That may tell you what it
was ...

df (maybe other programs) reports what users can use, I beleive. root
can use slightly more than this[1], so root can still do stuff if normal
users fill the disk up.

As for what is was/why it was there, I have no idea :-(
