0.71 is not an option here, because I had other problems (non PPP related) with
0.71 which all vanished when I overinstalled 0.82. I think before I patch the
sources, I will give user-ppp a try.

If it would be of any help, I can provide a login on the host (ppp-dialin or
ssh-login via the internet). However, the host is *not* an experimental system
because it runs several WWW and FTP servers and acts as a gateway to 3 subnets
- so, we can't use it as hack-and-try-system. However, if I can do anything
which helps developers track down the problem, let me know!
