Because you don't have a perfectly accurate clock in the machine. :)

You can tweak with the settings to try and figure out which timer in the
system generates more accurate time.  Bruce posted about this a long time
ago, so it's probably in the archives.  It should be documented
somewhere (if it is, it should be documented somewhere more obvious). :)

'man clock' doesn't help me to determine how to make my system clock
more accurate.., and LINT has a bunch of:

# More undocumented options for linting.

options         CLK_CALIBRATION_LOOP
options         "CLK_USE_I8254_CALIBRATION"
options         "CLK_USE_I586_CALIBRATION"

But I think they above have something to do with it.
