Reverting this patch solves the segfaulting of mktable under CURRENT and 4.0 and it solves the problem of generating bogus entries under 3.4-STABLE. It would parse tagtable.tab and generate a tagtable.c which contained bogus characters which would cause the build to fail. I am not sure which piece of the combination is in error.
