The interface ppp0 should appear if you start pppd; you may
try it by starting as root in one window the daemon:

# pppd

and ignore the LCP there; now issue from another window to check it:

# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
#
