If a kernel change is that drastic then there ought to be a message in UPDATING. It shouldn't take an 8-hour process to (say) get a small bugfix in place. (And please do not just quote UPDATING to me, I've read it.) I don't want to sound like a troll or flamer but this has never been a hard requirement before and I don't see why it is now.
