Once again, I apologize for posting an off-topic message to freebsd-jobs@.

Yesterday, in recognition of the charter for this list (and my error
in approving a post that was off-topic), I posted a note requesting
that further discussion regarding someone's post be directed
elsewhere. I then set mailman to trap posts that were obvious
attempts to carry on the discussion in -jobs@.

This morning, I found 7 posts awaiting disposition; I rejected each
of them with a note.

Since bypassing that check is trivial, I have now placed the list
as a whole on "emergency moderation" status, so no messages get
through that are not first vetted by a person (well, me, anyway).

I will take this opportunity to remind folks of the purpose and
charter of the list:

* freebsd-jobs Jobs offered and sought

|This is a forum for posting employment notices and resumes
|specifically related to FreeBSD, e.g. if you're seeking FreeBSD-related
|employment or have a job involving FreeBSD to advertise then this
|is the right place. This is NOT a mailing list for general
|employment issues since adequate forums for that already exist
|elsewhere.
|
|Note that this list, like other mailing lists @FreeBSD.ORG, is
|distributed worldwide. Thus, you need to be clear about location
|and the extent to which telecommuting or assistance with relocation
|is available.
|
|All email should be open source formats only. Examples of open
|source formats include PostScript (.ps), Portable Document Format
|(.pdf) and ASCII text. Proprietary formats such as MicroSoft Word
|(.doc) are not accepted.

Please especially note the part that reads "This is NOT a mailing
list for general employment issues since adequate forums for that
already exist elsewhere."

I understand that this will be a small inconvenience for those
trying to post legitimate messages announcing positions available
or wanted. I will try to mitigate this by checking for held messages
several times per day (vs. the once/day that I usually do). I
believe that the moderation status will be a net advantage for the
vast bulk of those who try to use the list as it was intended. As
for those who try to abuse it, optimizing the behavior of the list
for them is not a requirement as far as I'm concerned.

Summarizing the above in case there is any confusion: What part
of "Take the discussion elsewhere" did you not understand?

I look forward to being able to approve several on-topic messages,
especially those offering FreeBSD-related positions for hire.

Peace,
david (current hat: postmaster@freebsd.org)
