Just an idea but, could this be a cabling/termination problem?

I recently needed to read some files from an old 8200 and had
problems similar to you (timeouts/hangs). The problem disappeared
when I opened the exabyte and ripped out the internal termination.

Mind you, this was a slightly different config - 3.3-Stable,
adaptec 2940, the exabyte + a DDS4 drive with external termination.
