Jim, There are a couple of references to 30GB hard drives and 40GB hard drives in the message archives. Unfortunately, there were no hard and fast solutions. Just as an experiment, you might try switching the master and slave. You might also consider moving the drive to the second IDE controller and making it the master. That said, I am pessimistic that you can fix the problem. I ran into a similar problem some time ago with 20GB Maxtors on 3.x. The only solution was switching the motherboard. There were no apparent problems with the original MB, it just didn't work correctly with large hard drives and FreeBSD.
