Agreed, you have to # out all of the options in the Kernel and crunch.conf that aren't required, but 3.5 has all of the functions that I require. I've tried 4.1.1 without success and have gone to 4-stable to confirm my theory that 4x has too much built-in kernel bloat for a single-floppy build. As an aside, there was some traffic on using rl ethernet interfaces with PicoBSD. They work fine with Bridging as well, even though the documentation doesn't reflect it. I built a 3-way bridge to handle traffic from a Samba server connected to two subnets via the bridge. Downloading a 600+ Meg file to a PentiumII 300 running Windoze at 100% CPU utilization showed less than 0.1% CPU load on the bridge running a DX266 with a 12.5 MB/ sec data tranfer rate. I say less than 0.1% because most of the time ps -aux showed 0.0% Norm Audet support@thinserver.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Mon Oct 23 3:18:50 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from garbage.dyn.wiw.org (unknown [203.197.59.210]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80E9237B479 for ; Mon, 23 Oct 2000 03:18:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from root@localhost) by garbage.dyn.wiw.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id PAA01354 for freebsd-small@freebsd.org; Mon, 23 Oct 2000 15:48:14 +0530 Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 15:48:14 +0530 From: Vicky To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20001023154814.A1351@wiw.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0.1i Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Cc: Bcc: Subject: Reply-To: subscribe freebsd-small To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Mon Oct 23 3:30:22 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from arthur.intraceptives.com.au (arthur.intraceptives.com.au [203.22.72.70]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id B123F37B479 for ; Mon, 23 Oct 2000 03:30:19 -0700 (PDT) Received: (qmail 15841 invoked from network); 23 Oct 2000 10:30:13 -0000 Received: from wks-pc1.intraceptives.com.au (HELO waddy.intraceptives.com.au) (203.22.72.32) by arthur.intraceptives.com.au with SMTP; 23 Oct 2000 10:30:13 -0000 Message-Id: <4.3.1.2.20001023202107.05010510@arthur.intraceptives.com.au> X-Sender: wwlists@arthur.intraceptives.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 4.3.1 Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 20:30:10 +1000 To: From: Warren Welch Subject: Re: Pico on a CD In-Reply-To: <000001c03ad0$2f0306f0$5b903b3e@thomas> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hi all, I've been able to build PicoBSD form FreeBSD 4.1.1, setup to boot off CD, and have a whole heap of additional bit's a bob's to make the whole thing work... (I've even got a splash screen etc. for my particular application.) I've basically created my own, picobsd/custcd originally based on picobsd/cust... I doubt very much that we want to do that, but it works and I'm semi happy with it. If anyone is interested I can send a tarball of the directory. I use it to boot off, and restore a set of dump images of machines. (It lets me configure a bunch of same / similar machines really quickly... A bit like "Ghost" for FreeBSD.) It also lets me use network utils (dhcpclient, ping, traceroute, tcpdump, etc.) without having to have a dedicated FreeBSD host on hand! In ../../picobsd/floppy.tree/etc/ directory you can find your configuration files similar to the /etc directory in the normal FreeBSD installation. They can be edited prior to the build and should appear in the /etc directory when you boot the floppy. To configure the kernel for a particular build, I'll use bridge for an example, go to ../../picobsd/bridge/ and edit the PICOBSD file to select the kernel functions you require or add functions as needed. The crunch.conf file is (for bridge) in ../../picobsd/bridge/crunch1/ . # out the functions that you don't need and add functions in the same format as in the file. Look at tcpdump for an example of special cases. When you have the files edited to your satisfaction, go to ../../picobsd/build/ and do a ./clean all then ./build, select the build flavor you just edited and press . If everything goes well you will get to the install screen where you can insert a floppy into your drive and press . One thing that I've found important is to be sure your source tree (usr/src) is complete and up to date. Install the 3.x to 3 stable patch (in the ports), install cvsupit, update your whole source tree and do a make world otherwise you will get a lot of compile errors. Good Luck and I hope this helps other folks as well. Update also writes back files in /etc, so you can, say, add a /etc/rc.conf.local using ee then save it to the floppy. As for adding users, you might try adding adduser to the crunch.conf file. See the man documentation for the details. So I'll have > to figure out something else. Thanks anyway! Hi Gunnar, You're probably right. A big password file would probably take up most of the floppy and running multi-user would start needing more RAM. At what point is it cheaper and easier to use a hard drive? Anyway, a floppy based PicoBSD is more suited for routers and such. By the way, in case anyone is interested, there is an unpriviledged user password and directory allready set up by Abial. Look at /etc/master.passwd file. To change the password for "user", log in as root an do passwd user. Yo will get a propt for the new password...You could also hack more users using the "user" entry as a template, changing the parameters to suit your application..... > > > > Norm Audet > > > > > > > > support@thinserver.net --------------ms7E836A9C598DF65D9AAD3778 Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-signature; name="smime.p7s" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="smime.p7s" Content-Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature MIIH6AYJKoZIhvcNAQcCoIIH2TCCB9UCAQExCzAJBgUrDgMCGgUAMAsGCSqGSIb3DQEHAaCC BbkwggKdMIICBqADAgECAgMCjEIwDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEEBQAwgZQxCzAJBgNVBAYTAlpBMRUw EwYDVQQIEwxXZXN0ZXJuIENhcGUxFDASBgNVBAcTC0R1cmJhbnZpbGxlMQ8wDQYDVQQKEwZU aGF3dGUxHTAbBgNVBAsTFENlcnRpZmljYXRlIFNlcnZpY2VzMSgwJgYDVQQDEx9QZXJzb25h bCBGcmVlbWFpbCBSU0EgMTk5OS45LjE2MB4XDTAwMDUxMjE4NDAzMloXDTAxMDUxMjE4NDAz MlowQjEfMB0GA1UEAxMWVGhhd3RlIEZyZWVtYWlsIE1lbWJlcjEfMB0GCSqGSIb3DQEJARYQ bW9yZWxAYWNhZGlhLm5ldDCBnzANBgkqhkiG9w0BAQEFAAOBjQAwgYkCgYEAujZiOGV8imOI CbnIjfyZVjT5sHfBWNmg2StTcBDBLKf9MQwUUnRhAMBoyw5xLUQoME9fwDzfN89Rxor2Xw8q s3HzMAFNwtgTGWTT6WYN1NxcvnPsEjJqfg4dRqk6XmFfd4imbfQT4lckz6UmtDjw+NSksPE6 bMdffkAu9BfwUosCAwEAAaNOMEwwGwYDVR0RBBQwEoEQbW9yZWxAYWNhZGlhLm5ldDAMBgNV HRMBAf8EAjAAMB8GA1UdIwQYMBaAFIir8WCDZlX05FjHRh3AYb0j18OMMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEB BAUAA4GBAJdkB/OIB3YyTq0FMor76b3+tOTRpCqC7NR1EO0BVmFBGsUi75CD35+2/oK9mufU y6yJEt9TgnBRxzlsWlaUSHQa7SbWfQOKuViMguPGfbVl29Ry6Ntx3QmV2Ubg8Q17ykPhXj+p PI2H19GbmxZfp3xaaw4bqIhW5a0UsCdAJsvoMIIDFDCCAn2gAwIBAgIBCzANBgkqhkiG9w0B AQQFADCB0TELMAkGA1UEBhMCWkExFTATBgNVBAgTDFdlc3Rlcm4gQ2FwZTESMBAGA1UEBxMJ Q2FwZSBUb3duMRowGAYDVQQKExFUaGF3dGUgQ29uc3VsdGluZzEoMCYGA1UECxMfQ2VydGlm aWNhdGlvbiBTZXJ2aWNlcyBEaXZpc2lvbjEkMCIGA1UEAxMbVGhhd3RlIFBlcnNvbmFsIEZy ZWVtYWlsIENBMSswKQYJKoZIhvcNAQkBFhxwZXJzb25hbC1mcmVlbWFpbEB0aGF3dGUuY29t MB4XDTk5MDkxNjE0MDE0MFoXDTAxMDkxNTE0MDE0MFowgZQxCzAJBgNVBAYTAlpBMRUwEwYD VQQIEwxXZXN0ZXJuIENhcGUxFDASBgNVBAcTC0R1cmJhbnZpbGxlMQ8wDQYDVQQKEwZUaGF3 dGUxHTAbBgNVBAsTFENlcnRpZmljYXRlIFNlcnZpY2VzMSgwJgYDVQQDEx9QZXJzb25hbCBG cmVlbWFpbCBSU0EgMTk5OS45LjE2MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCzaVqX 1NAWC3q1xV3pIZwjcs0STEv3fs/H+8pyJPRCUqxXleN7YXoXhOf9cjk4lLTq7WWnkgZeveBl 9hm7lHl2TD65aHB1hBz0EXQAvAUsTwkDFzHM9EHUcsamXeKIRLCLLsRN8fDWhT5s85WUeJF+ QOmc0Y0VV47Cc+Uw3kb1TwIDAQABozcwNTASBgNVHRMBAf8ECDAGAQH/AgEAMB8GA1UdIwQY MBaAFHJJwnM0xlX0C3ZygX539IfnxrIOMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBBAUAA4GBAGvGWekx+um27LED 2N9ycv6RYEjqxlXde/BnjsZhcOdtwqU32J23FyhWBYvdXHVvxpGQxmxmcRPQEHxrkW+G4CE2 LcHX6rIJrc8tbcaDUpv7u/6ch538t+l0kuRcl678fqzKDW9yemcsa3P1hvmd9QBu9B0Hzp2e gmMp75MJflXeMYIB9zCCAfMCAQEwgZwwgZQxCzAJBgNVBAYTAlpBMRUwEwYDVQQIEwxXZXN0 ZXJuIENhcGUxFDASBgNVBAcTC0R1cmJhbnZpbGxlMQ8wDQYDVQQKEwZUaGF3dGUxHTAbBgNV BAsTFENlcnRpZmljYXRlIFNlcnZpY2VzMSgwJgYDVQQDEx9QZXJzb25hbCBGcmVlbWFpbCBS U0EgMTk5OS45LjE2AgMCjEIwCQYFKw4DAhoFAKCBsTAYBgkqhkiG9w0BCQMxCwYJKoZIhvcN AQcBMBwGCSqGSIb3DQEJBTEPFw0wMDEwMjQxMDU0MTJaMCMGCSqGSIb3DQEJBDEWBBQa58xE kk+NZ0oTw8zVq/3dmfANazBSBgkqhkiG9w0BCQ8xRTBDMAoGCCqGSIb3DQMHMA4GCCqGSIb3 DQMCAgIAgDAHBgUrDgMCBzANBggqhkiG9w0DAgIBQDANBggqhkiG9w0DAgIBKDANBgkqhkiG 9w0BAQEFAASBgDg2qVcASEertjfkQCC7crvBGSmy/ti19fd+RvKhl1+jku/wpAqmbuobSeoA d/2QD4M8g6aow7kwF4m0MmI5jYxAmq78+DlSWsh5lN7sOV2rAu/K1YSZvh0zvFVREM0aq+7R xlJVtQ+NUaBhbAq0BrbR0BKAyc0k8q/cq+cf0ImM --------------ms7E836A9C598DF65D9AAD3778-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Tue Oct 24 10:24: 4 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from p23.base (unknown [64.222.208.118]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 00B3F37B479 for ; Tue, 24 Oct 2000 10:23:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from acadia.net (localhost.base [127.0.0.1]) by p23.base (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id NAA07211; Tue, 24 Oct 2000 13:24:04 GMT (envelope-from morel@acadia.net) Message-ID: <39F58D6A.DEB242F3@acadia.net> Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 13:23:54 +0000 From: Morel Reply-To: morel@acadia.net X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.75 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 3.5-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Gunnar Flygt , freebsd-small@freebsd.org Subject: Re: picobsd on cdrom References: <39EF5E7C.2F483AE8@acadia.net> <20001023091605.C575@sr.se> <39F40770.D5F782EA@acadia.net> <20001023231752.A33841@sr.se> <39F483F7.7042C272@acadia.net> <20001024072451.A45291@sr.se> Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature"; micalg=sha1; boundary="------------msBBCAF6A5246EBCD865B70511" Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG This is a cryptographically signed message in MIME format. --------------msBBCAF6A5246EBCD865B70511 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > > > Gunnar Flygt wrote: > > > > > Thanks a lot! I would like to create my own PicoBSD disk, with programs I need. I haven't got FreeBSD, but I guess linux can do the job. What do I have to do to make the system boot from a disk? Just create a linux rescue disk and put all the progs on it? (you don't have to explain how to image a disk, I know how :) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Tue Oct 24 20:28: 3 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from web5104.mail.yahoo.com (web5104.mail.yahoo.com [216.115.106.74]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 276DD37B479 for ; Tue, 24 Oct 2000 20:28:01 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <20001025032800.11407.qmail@web5104.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [203.76.17.27] by web5104.mail.yahoo.com; Wed, 25 Oct 2000 14:28:00 EST Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 14:28:00 +1100 (EST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Paul=20Jansen?= Subject: PicoBSD dial & Intel ethexpress pro/10 ISA cards To: small@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG I went out the other day and bought some 2nd hand NIC's from a shop. They are Intel Etherexpress Pro/10 ISA cards. I vought these because I read at the PicoBSD website that they are supported - see here. http://people.freebsd.org/~picobsd/hardware.html I downloaded the intel softset2 utility [version 4.10(i)] from the intel support website to verify the identity of the card I have. It checks out. I also used the utility to verify IRQ and port settings for the card. I have configured the Pico floppy but I get a few errors on screen. These are: ie0: unknown board_id: 9080 ie0 not found at 0x300 ie0 not found at 0x300 The port address is right, as I mentioned I checked this with the softset2 utility I'm using the version of PicoBSD dial that you can download from the website. Any ideas? Should I just get andother NE2000 or 3Com card if I can find on instead? Thanks. _____________________________________________________________________________ http://clubs.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Clubs - Join a club or build your own! I check LINT from my installed FreeBSD 4.1, the driver of Inter EtherExpress Pro/10 is "ex," and the "ie" is the driver of AT&T StarLAN. Maybe this is a mistake of PicoBSD... I am now trying to make myself PicoBSD from Freebsd 4.1, hope works...
