What has been dropped is the 'wd' driver. This one could do MFM/RLL etc
drives.

Or plain broken by years of faithful service.

For entertainment I ran 4.something on a 386SX40 with 4MB. Using a
disk that was installed on another system of course. But it ran! [well..
it crawled but still..]
