You see, this makes these two events not independent but correlated by the
fact they were in the same car...

Do we really need to continue this? On the other hand, two clowns may be
giving public good entertainment ;-)

Nobody said it can not. One only mentioned that if single event has
probability P. probability of two such events if they are independent is P
squared, which (for small P) is much smaller than probability of single
event.

I guess from now on I really need to go and put on a clown makeup ;-)
