Don't know.

BTW, space characters _not_ at the end of the line are handled literally,
e.g.,

.\" Don't do this:
This is a sentence. This sentence is separated from the previous one by
an abnormal number of spaces.  Whole paragraphs   can                be
misformatted                                                  manually.
