Just a thought, but have you overriden the fetch command? For some distfiles a 
length test argument is passed to the fetch command. This test need to be 
disabled for wget etc.

BTW are you aware that "make checksum" and  "make checksum-recursive", are the 
normal way to fetch distfiles, not "make fetch".
