vfs.root.mountfrom tells the kernel which FS to use as the root FS, this is
after the kernel is loaded, which is done from the first valid partition on=
 the
boot drive hence what your seeing.

Would be nice if we had more control of this but the quick fix is remove the
loader from your old device.
