This has been happening to my Intel 8260 as well.
It seems to be a known bug.

I circumvent it by manually loading the wifi modules after boot. This
doesn't crash the system.

As a dirty hack? You could add the loading as a script and automatically
load the modules when the FreeBSD is fully up and running.
