I should mention outside of this ad that Nextrials is a great place to
work. It's a small company with lots of potential and is totally in love
with FreeBSD and open source software. The work load is high but the
environment is relaxed (no corporate dress code, etc). We'd really like
to hire a real FreeBSD admin, not just someone that knows linux and
threw FreeBSD on their resume just for us.

Senior Systems Administrator 

Nextrials is looking for a Senior Systems Administrator for immediate
full-time employment in our San Ramon, California corporate headquarters.
This position reports directly to the CTO.  Nextrials provides integrated
clinical research solutions to biopharmaceutical and medical device companies,
enabling them to streamline their clinical research process with timely access
to high-quality data.  To do this, we've created Prism, the most innovative
and easy-to-use Electronic Data Capture (EDC) software on the market.  

Nextrials was founded in 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it has
become the leading EDC software and services provider in the world's center
for biotechnology. Former researchers within the oncology group at Genentech,
our founders have more than 60 years of combined industry experience and our
commitment to innovation and value has earned us 2 industry awards in 2004:
Bio-IT World's Best of Show and Frost and Sullivan's Customer Value
Enhancement Award.

A successful applicant will meet the following requirements:

  - more than five years of applicable systems administration experience
  - strong interpersonal and communication skills including
    - writing quality management documentation
    - writing proposals and papers
    - acting as a vendor liaison
    - making presentations to client audiences or professional peers
    - working closely with upper management
  - ability to solve problems quickly and completely
  - ability to identify complex tasks which require automation and to automate
    them
  - extensive experience managing medium to large secure, highly-available,
    remotely-managed database-backed application service networks running
    FreeBSD/Linux
  - extensive scripting experience in Perl and sh/bash
  - complete understanding of TCP/IP including routing 
  - experience using and administering relational databases
  - experience with network security, building firewalls, deploying
    authentication systems and applying cryptography to network applications
  - experience with network monitoring
  - experience with comprehensive site disaster recovery planning and
    implementation
  - deep administrative experience in installing, maintaining and tuning the
    following:
    - Apache (versions 1 and 2) + mod_ssl + mod_perl
    - PostgreSQL / MySQL (replication experience is a plus)
    - ipfilter/ipnat
    - Amanda and other backup technologies
    - samba
  - experience integrating an open-source systems back office with a windows
    client-based front office
  - experience managing budgets, writing personnel reviews and interviewing
    and hiring
  - ability to be on call 24/7
  - occasional travel to Washington DC
  - ability and desire to excel in a fast-paced, small company atmosphere

Additionally, background in the following areas is desirable:

  - experience working in a government regulated environment
  - background in applying quality systems management techniques to systems
    administration
