I am unsure about this change. I understand the value in generalizing = it, but I think leaving it with a specific version number provides a = clearer example. I have some ideas about clarifying this, but I would like to better = understand the final point because "appropriate compiler" is a little = vague. Is lang/gcc the compiler that is always used in this situation as = long as it satisfies the minimal version requirement? Or is it possible = that a version older than lang/gcc will be used? Example: USE_GCC is set to "4.2+". Would lang/gcc (currently at 4.6, I = believe) always be built and installed? Or would 4.2 potentially be = built, as this is also available in the ports tree? If I should get = clarification on another list, I would be glad to do that. The following page contains an incomplete draft of some proposed additions to the FreeBSD handbook: http://petitecloud.org/handbook.jsp We'll be fleshing it out over the next couple of days. The proposed new sections concern bhyve, the new hypervisor that will be part of the base system of FreeBSD 10. Currently the relevant section of FreeBSD manual covers VirtualBox, but not bhyve. We were advised by Eitan Adler to post this to the doc list. (I am co-developer of petitecloud, a forthcoming front end for bhyve.) The request is that mention be made of the fact that those who install pkgng with the hope of using it for binary package management would benefit from being informed that there are no officially approved repositories for it yet. For example, in this thread on FreeBSD forums. http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=41933 there is a somewhat frustrated user. Thank you for taking the time to look at it. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 19 01:50:01 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@smarthost.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D6348C3 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206c::16:87]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C82892692 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:00 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.7/8.14.7) with ESMTP id r8J1o0vh060785 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:00 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.7/8.14.7/Submit) id r8J1o0Ge060784; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:00 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:00 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <201309190150.r8J1o0Ge060784@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, ShelLuser Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3F61448 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:43:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from oldred.freebsd.org (oldred.freebsd.org [8.8.178.121]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E21472621 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:43:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from oldred.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.6]) by oldred.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.7) with ESMTP id r8J1h7Sm018890 for ; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:43:07 GMT (envelope-from nobody@oldred.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by oldred.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id r8J1h75j018886; Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:43:07 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <201309190143.r8J1h75j018886@oldred.freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:43:07 GMT From: ShelLuser To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.1 Subject: docs/182218: Add an ipfilter rc.conf option in handbook for IPv6 X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2013 01:50:01 -0000 >Number: 182218 >Category: docs >Synopsis: Add an ipfilter rc.conf option in handbook for IPv6 >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: change-request >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Thu Sep 19 01:50:00 UTC 2013 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: ShelLuser >Release: 9.1-RELEASE-P7 >Organization: >Environment: FreeBSD smtp2.losoco.com 9.1-RELEASE-p7 FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE-p7 #3 r255465: Wed Sep 11 03:35:14 CEST 2013 root@smtp2.losoco.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SMTP2 amd64 >Description: I'm one of the lucky people to have found a hosting provider which supports both IPv4 /and/ IPv6 (native /64 IPv6 netblock on each server). It's taking us a bit longer than expected to write the documentation. What is our effective deadline for submitting a complete first draft if our proposed new sections are to get into the handbook when FreeBSD 10 is officially released, or as soon as possible thereafter? Is there a documentation freeze, or anything similar, coming up in the near future? I'd like to move it to an appendix. This will create a new file similar to how uses.xml is currently implemented. There is a patch for versions.xml but it is deceptively long (I used 'svn cp' to ensure the history is preserved).
