This is something in the terminal setting. The status character is
getting set to control-J or control-M. I'm not sure why this would
happen. But this is your first clue.
You might try running
stty nokerninfo
in your .profile or .cshrc to try to get rid of this, for the time
being, until you can come up with a more permanent solution.
