hello
I have just setup a freebsd box to connect with ftp..
well first of all why you are not able to use -auto mode?
hmm, I had some trouble with ppp -auto myisp
it was saying dst address.... something...
well I have found out that I must leave one blank or I 
should put tabs before the commands

also at ppp> you may click on ctrl-z and then issue
bg command to put the ppp dialer background...
