Using a different (SanDisk) USB flash drive, installation worked.


The SHA256 checksum changed on the USB flash drive, so the installer must be
writing to the drive.  I'd prefer that the installer not write to the flash
drive,
so that the checksum can be verified over time.


I will wipe and recycle the failing USB flash drive (A-DATA).
