Try creating a .xsession file in your home directory (and make it executable) with the gnome startup program, eg #!/bin/sh exec /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session You could also edit /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession, but this way is simpler if you're not worrying about other users.
