Just guessing: You are trying to read a non-multiple of 512 :-)

>    open ("/dev/rwd0s2e", O_RDONLY, 0);
>    lseek (f, SBOFF, SEEK_SET);

that's right. but what makes it fail? i mean, i'm using read normally, 
and nowhere does it say you have to read in multiples of 512.

please help.
