Subject: scsi probe at boot time

Hello,

I am having trouble using a Spectralogic 10000 SCSI tape changer. The tape changer locks
up during the FreeBSD boot sequence. It locks up right when FreeBSD prints the message:

"Waiting 10 seconds for SCSI devices to settle"

The changer does not respond anymore after this, and only the two tape drives in the changer
are recognized (SONY SDX-500C). This is right when FreeBSD probes the SCSI devices, right?

I also used to have the same problem occur earlier in the boot sequence, before the OS
even started loading. This was when the SCSI host adapter did it's own probing of the bus. So,
I went into the SCSI BIOS, and disabled the "probe-at-boot" function.

There is a workaround that I have used successfully. I don't turn the changer on until the server or FreeBSD
computer has booted completely. Once that is finished, I issue the following command:

"camcontrol rescan bus 0"

This successfully recognizes everything and enables or configures the changer for use. The changer
does not lock up. How come I can do a rescan and everything is OK, but the SCSI probe during boot
causes the tape changer to lock up?

Does anyone know a solution or better (i.e. permanent) workaround than the one I currently use?

thanks,
