Have you tried other models? The short-term solution is to print to a PostScript or PCL file, then copy the file over the network to the printer. HP printers accept files on port 9100 (use nc(1)), via lpd or FTP, numerous other ways. Longer-term, it depends. If the added features of CUPS are worth the fragility, live with it.
