As far as putty is concerned, I've never been comfortable running an ssh client by someone who not only refuses to implement rsa authentication, but also seems to lack understanding as to why rsa authentication is a good thing to have. I recommend securecrt, or tterm with ttssh extensions if cost is an issue. (you can't beat free in the price category). Most importantly, get rid of telnetd. Any ssh implementation is an amazing improvement over telnetd. Since the original request was regarding vt100, I'd lean towards securecrt. Excellent vt support, complete with a great font.
