the cdrom is the shareware (free) version, but on a cdrom.
you're not really paying for the software, just the convenience of
having it all in your sweaty hands.. :-)

there is a commercial version of BSD called BSDI
but it is a sibling rather than a version of the same animal.

they have support etc.
