Thanks to all the people offering suggestions to the problem I described in  
an earlier mail. Just for the mailing list archives (I couldn't locate the  
problem there) I'll post the solution that Jordan K. Hubbard gave me:

In my case, I had to use 1:sd(0,a)/kernel.
