I suggest two different approaches (have not tried that, but...)

1) sidegrade (with build-from-source) to 9.3-RELEASE, then use
   freebsd-update to 10.x

2) don't upgrade to 10-STABLE, but surce-upgrade to 10.0 or 10.1-RELEASE
