I believe bind-4.9.6 and samba don't cooperate well, most likely due to the new security measures in 4.9.6 (though I really have no clue when you get down to it) :) Adding -DREDUCE_ROOT_DNS_LOOKUPS to the flags line in samba's Makefile stopped the hangs.
