Cause "blah > fails" just isn't enough. As I said, when I ran portupgrade -ai, I got errors about stale=20 dependencies and a prompt to run pkgdb -F. After running pkgdb -L and=20 installing all the missing dependencies, portupgrade -ai ran fine.
