 create the .htaccess file

 AuthName Security
 AuthType Basic
 require valid-user
 Options Indexes
 AuthUserFile <PATH TO YOUR PASSWORD FILE>
 =====================

create the password file using htpasswd

 in httpd.conf replace the directive
 allowoverride none
 with
 allowoverride all

 restart apache

 THATS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO
