I'm not sure if I have the answer, but the above problem went away.

I was having trouble with a webpage which was doing a search using 
php and mysql.  It would time out before a page could be put back to 
the user.  I removed the search.  No more swap_pager_getswapspace 
errors and no more freeze ups.

Does this make sense to anyone?
