I don't have any experience with DSL yet, but in the case of US West's 
DSL offerings in Minnesota, the DSL "modem" is really a ethernet <-> ATM
bridge.  I picked up a $50 486 box to be my router (with FreeBSD, of
course) when I get DSL installed.
