What you are saying certainly makes sense for users who compile &
install from the ports, but not for the binary package users, if I'm
interpreting you correctly.  There is no "source directory" for binary 
package users, and that's the whole point of this argument.

 * I think having a COPYRIGHT file in the ports area for each port would
 * be a good idea though so that *we* can easily check the validity of
 * a ports license since I came across the msql license buried in the
 * directory hierarchy.

It won't be difficult if we keep a machine with all (ok, most) ports
installed (i.e., thud), because Jordan's proposal will have all of
them in a central location.  I still don't like the idea of carrying
loads of files that is already elsewhere on the system, IN OUR CVS
TREE.
