The patch also adds the PID of the Wi-Spy device and utilizes the new UQ_KBD_IGNORE flag to make ukbd(4) ignore this device, leaving it to be handled by ugen(4): Nov 19 17:04:28 fangorn kernel: ugen0: MetaGeek Wi-Spy, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2 It would be nice if __FreeBSD_version in sys/param.h could be bumped once this patch goes in. The fix addresses the 3 problems associated with this mouse: its misrepresentation as a uhid device, invalid offsets for its buttons and x,y,z position coordinates, and the phantom button click. The first problem is resolved by bypassing hid_is_collection() and reading the usb interface descriptor directly to detect a usb mouse. The second problem is resolved by hard coding the offsets of the mouse's buttons. The third problem is resolved by ignoring all interrupts requests for that mouse with the first byte of ibuf set to 0x14. Cesar Philippidis Hellmuth Michaelis Engineers Dorr H. The third problem is resolved by ignoring all > interrupts requests for that mouse with the first byte of ibuf > set to 0x14. The real problem here is twofold: 1. Our HID parser has major shortcomings in many ways, which are e.g.=20 responsible for the messed up item positions you are seeing. 2. ums(4) can only handle mice which report relevant events in a report with id 0. If a report with a different id comes in (0x14 in this case), things get messy. I'm currently working on a fix for this as well as our other HID drivers an= d=20 related userland tools. I'm assuming this is bad, but what to do about it? I'm also getting some unknown devices: uhub4: on uhub0 uhub5: on uhub4 ugen2: on uhub4 uhub6: on uhub3 Vendor ID 0x413c is Dell, and is already in the usbdevs file. The other vendor is O2, and I got their ID for the attached patch from the list at http://www.usb.org/developers/tools. The 0x0058 device is already in our usbdevs file, it's the port replicator (docking station) that the laptop is plugged into currently. I added the 0x8103 device in the attached patch based on an entry in the NetBSD usbdevs file. (The entry makes sense to me as well, since I have one of those.) So I have two questions ... for the devices (and vendors) that are already in my local usbdevs file, why are they still showing up by ID? And how do I find the device IDs for the two unknown devices? I imagine that the O2 device is related to my built in smart card reader, not sure about the other one. Firstly it seems that Ian's patch for VIA EHCI controllers is already in 6.1, so that clearly isn't helping in this case at least. I also ran a few more tests with 3 different machines and all the USB 2.0 devices I could scrape together. The machines and their EHCI controllers are: #1 FreeBSD llama.fishballoon.org 6.1-SECURITY FreeBSD 6.1-SECURITY #0: Mon Aug 28 05:21:08 UTC 2006 root@builder.daemonology.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 ehci0: mem 0xdf102000-0xdf1020ff irq 12 at device 16.3 on pci0 ehci0: [GIANT-LOCKED] usb3: EHCI version 1.0 usb3: companion controllers, 2 ports each: usb0 usb1 usb2 usb3: on ehci0 usb3: USB revision 2.0 #2 FreeBSD tuatara.fishballoon.org 6.1-SECURITY FreeBSD 6.1-SECURITY #0: Mon Aug 28 05:21:08 UTC 2006 root@builder.daemonology.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 ehci0: mem 0xda008000-0xda0080ff irq 10 at device 17.2 on pci0 ehci0: [GIANT-LOCKED] usb4: EHCI version 0.95 usb4: companion controllers, 2 ports each: usb2 usb3 usb4: on ehci0 usb4: USB revision 2.0 #3 (Booted from a 6.1-R fixit CD - can't be bothered to type out the uname :-) ehci0: usb2: EHCI version 0.95 usb2: companion controllers, 3 ports each: usb0 usb1 usb2: usb2: USB revision 2.0 I tried these umass devices (all claim to be USB2.0): Vosonic VP6230 disk/card reader combo: da5: < VP6230 1.09> Fixed Direct Access SCSI-0 device Nikon D50 digital camera: da2: Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device Seagate enclosure with 300GB disk: da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-0 device Kingston 2GB flash drive: da1: Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device Apple iPod: da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device Tested by reading a reasonable amount of data (500MB) from the raw device and also by writing then reading back a 500MB file from the mounted FAT filesystem, re-mounting it between the writing and reading steps. The 300GB drive was apparently too big for mount_msdosfs to handle so I only did the raw test there. All the reading/writing was done with dd using a 1MB block size. On machine #1 (VIA VT6202, EHCI 1.0) everything attached to ehci0 fine, but would hang for several minutes with a lot of this on the console: Nov 22 00:52:41 llama kernel: umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT Nov 22 00:53:46 llama kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, TIMEOUT Nov 22 00:54:51 llama kernel: umass0: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, TIMEOUT I got this with the raw and file transfer, sometimes immediately, sometimes after transferring up to a couple of hundred MB. On machine #2 (VIA VT6202, EHCI 0.95) everything attached to ehci0 except for the VP6230 which insisted on attaching as a USB1.1 device instead (it does this under Windows on the same machine too). Apart from that all the tests were successful, no hangs or other weirdness. On machine #3 (NEC uPD 720100, EHCI 0.95) everything attached to ehci0 and all the tests were completely successful. I'm not sure what any of that proves except that VIA EHCI controllers clearly have some issues that aren't restricted to FreeBSD MS-DOS filesystem driver. I'm open to suggestions for any additional debugging, although not much is possible on machine #1 as it's my firewall/router :( Cheers, Scott -- =========================================================================== Scott Mitchell | PGP Key ID | "Eagles may soar, but weasels Cambridge, England | 0x54B171B9 | don't get sucked into jet engines" scott at fishballoon.org | 0xAA775B8B | -- Anon From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 22 17:02:34 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F22416A403; Wed, 22 Nov 2006 17:02:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chris@vindaloo.com) Received: from corellia.vindaloo.com (corellia.vindaloo.com [64.51.148.100]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 72BB443DAE; Wed, 22 Nov 2006 17:01:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chris@vindaloo.com) Received: from yavin.vindaloo.com (yavin.vindaloo.com [172.24.144.34]) by corellia.vindaloo.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0A545C34; Wed, 22 Nov 2006 11:30:21 -0500 (EST) Received: from dagobah.vindaloo.com (dagobah.vindaloo.com [172.24.145.68]) by yavin.vindaloo.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29DC225332; Wed, 22 Nov 2006 11:30:21 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost.vindaloo.com (localhost.vindaloo.com [IPv6:::1]) by dagobah.vindaloo.com (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id kAMGQa2v001604; Wed, 22 Nov 2006 11:26:36 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from chris@vindaloo.com) From: Christopher Sean Hilton To: up@3.am In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 11:26:35 -0500 Message-Id: <1164212795.1087.12.camel@dagobah.vindaloo.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.6.2 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, freebsd-usb@freebsd.org, freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: External USB drive kernel problems X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 17:02:34 -0000 On Tue, 2006-11-21 at 12:38 -0500, up@3.am wrote: > (Please reply directly to me, as I am not subscribed) > > I just bought a VIA external USB enclosure with a Hitachi 200GB ATA drive > to use for disk-based backups. I have noticed that the plain jane enclosures seem to work fine but the ones with special features fail. In particular I have an enclosure with both a disk and an SD media slot purchased from and branded by Compusa that does not work with FreeBSD. I have also noticed that the enclosures with a one touch backup button aren't supported. I unfortunately do not know how to debug these enclosures. They tend to be so cheap that I just home in on the ones that are supported. I've noticed that the local Best Buy is carrying an Adaptec enclosure. I have two of the 2.5" ones and they seem to work fine. Here's a link to the 3.5" version which I assume uses that same chipset as the 2.5" one: http://preview.tinyurl.com/vzsha http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6991605&st=adaptec&type=product&id=1099392683637 -- Chris From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 23 04:05:13 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 22DC516A407 for ; Thu, 23 Nov 2006 04:05:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from achilov-rn@askd.ru) Received: from to-495.askd.ru (master.askd.ru [80.242.75.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED77543D58 for ; Thu, 23 Nov 2006 04:04:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from achilov-rn@askd.ru) Received: from to-495.askd.ru (IDENT:shelton@localhost.askd.ru [127.0.0.1]) by to-495.askd.ru (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id kAN456fh071993 for ; Thu, 23 Nov 2006 10:05:06 +0600 (NOVT) (envelope-from achilov-rn@askd.ru) Received: by to-495.askd.ru (8.13.6/8.13.6/Submit) id kAN456Fc071983 for freebsd-usb@freebsd.org; Thu, 23 Nov 2006 10:05:06 +0600 (NOVT) (envelope-from achilov-rn@askd.ru) X-Authentication-Warning: to-495.askd.ru: shelton set sender to achilov-rn@askd.ru using -f From: "Rashid N. But I cannot use it with FreeBSD, and must use ordinary cord mouse Genius NetScroll+. Why? Because wireless mouse don't work. It successfully detected, but when I move it, does nothing. Receiver indicator blinks, so mouse sends an event. But a mouse pointer is dead. This time a keyboard works good (X cannot detect multimedia keys, but it's different story) I hd have tried two different wireless set - TwinTouch Optical Value+ and TwinTouch SE - no differences. -- With Best Regards. The device identifies with freebsd as: ugen0: Prolific Technology Inc. USB-Serial Controller, rev 1.10/3.00, addr 2 I'm running 6.2-RC1. I have tried to search with google for hints howto configure this device with ntpd. I have the following /etc/ntp.conf: ------8<--------8<--------8<--------8< enable stats monitor pps server 127.127.20.1 driftfile /etc/ntp/ntp.drift logconfig +clockall ------8<--------8<--------8<--------8< As far as I understand this 127.127.20.1 uses nmea and tries to open /dev/gps1 device for NMEA output. What device file should I link /dev/gps1 to, and if it doesn't exist, how do I create it? Any hints will be greatly appreciated. I hope this is not simply a matter of RTFM since I have searched the net quite extensively for any hints. :) kind regards, Bo Granlund From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Nov 25 05:33:33 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F20216A407 for ; Sat, 25 Nov 2006 05:33:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from niki@totalterror.net) Received: from sellinet.net (galileo.sellinet.net [82.199.192.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id EE57C43D53 for ; Sat, 25 Nov 2006 05:32:46 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from niki@totalterror.net) Received: (qmail 8900 invoked by uid 1009); 25 Nov 2006 07:33:29 +0200 Received: from niki@totalterror.net by galileo by uid 1002 with qmail-scanner-1.22 (spamassassin: 3.0.3. Probably this will get your USB GPS > receiver identified as USB Serial port /dev/cuaU[0-9] I loaded the uplcom module and reattached the gps receiver. And then I linked /dev/cuaU0 to /dev/gps1. Cat'ing /dev/gps1 returns NMEA data, but when I try start ntpd this comes to the logs: Nov 25 10:58:24 battleangel ntpd[798]: refclock_nmea: time_pps_create failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device Do you have any clue as to why it complains about an inappropriate ioctl? Thanks for the uplcom pointer, now I got somewhat forward in my attempts to make ntpd work with my usb receiver. kind regards, Bo Granlund
