The page is bad here:
	"Summary ... just let xorg-server use hald by default."

FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE & 9.0-RELEASE by default do Not run hald.  See:
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/hald
	# Add the following line to /etc/rc.conf to enable the HAL daemon:
	#
	# hald_enable="YES"
There is no hald_enable="YES" in /etc/defaults/rc.conf (Happily, IMO).
