In the section [X-*-Core] of /usr/local/share/config/kdm/kdmrc I had to
uncomment the line:
Authorize=false
before kdm would start.

I've reverted to kde2 on one of my machines, because version 3 was very slow
-there appeared to be lots of kdeinit processes using CPU time, but not
achieving much.
