i. you should check to see you can ping yourself ping 127.0.0.1 ii. if [i] works try pinging the original ip address ping blah.blah.blah.blah iii. if [ii] works try pinging your dns ping mydomain.edu iv. if [iii] works try pinging any dns entry ping www.mydomain.edu or ping ftp.mydomain.edu or ping something.that.u.have Tell us at what point it fails.
