The version of ppp that shipped with 3.1 may not have had the ``alias 
pptp'' command.  You can get the latest version of ppp from 
http://www.Awfulhak.org/ppp.html if you're interested - the ``alias'' 
command has been superceded by the ``nat'' command (although 
``alias'' is still supported).

WRT an MS-LIKE VPN, the design of PPTP seems quite horrible to me.  I 
doubt it'll ever make it into user-ppp.  At the moment, skip or 
PPPoSSH is your best option with user-ppp.  I have plans to look at 
IPSEC.
