Did you test this with GCC 4.2?  If not (and in general), please use
USE_GCC=yes, not USE_GCC=any.

Mk/bsd.gcc.mk covers that and I had an update to strengthen that even
further, which I lost (in a fight with Git) but will try to recreate.
