I'd suggest forcing the mode(s) you want using the 3com card's setup
utility.  FreeBSD should pick up the settings and configure itself
accordingly.  I don't have any experience in 100mbit mode, though, check
the mail archives.  

The 3c90x series is plagued by having too little on-board buffer space. If
you need 100mbit you might find more luck in a 100mbit DEC-based card,
like a Kingston, Dayna, or others.
