So,

1st I have to apologize for the communication mix up.

TIMELINE:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3Dports/165457
 removes perl < 5.12
changes default to 5.14.2 (NOT COMMITTED)

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3D165605
removes compat code for < 5.12

UPDATING added

UPDATING fixed

Mk/bsd.perl.mk reverted to always include a DEFAULT case

lang/perl5.8 and /lang/perl5.10 restored

p5-Mail-Spamassassin and p5-Net-DNS reverted.

If you want to truly revert this, pots/165605 needs to be reverted. I
should be able to accomplish that reasonably quickly (i.e) tonight if
thats what we want and if we want a -exp run to test the revert or not.
If not, what else need I do to help. I'll be available nearly every
night this week from 9pm-1am EST.

This seems like a lot of fus for people that have been using an EOL perl
for 3 yrs esp when we didn't change the default case. What is the
suggested DEPRECATED time for the now restored lang/perl files.

  Modified files:
    Mk bsd.perl.mk
  Log:
Revert 1.23 to restore default value for PERL_PORT. If no value is set
for PERL_PORT by default, INDEX will often fail with dependency errors
of the form "ports/lang: not found".

It is possible to disagree about what that default value ought to be
(e.g. 5.12 vs. 5.8), but not its existance.

This reverts ports/165457 for this file.

This is not actually feature safe. However, it is necessary to not
  violate POLA.

  Log:
Undo ports/165457 to not violate POLA. As far as I knew, the PR
was to test what happened when we did eventually delete these two
ports, not to delete them immediately.

A subsequent commit will add appropriate deprecation messages.

I agree with these sentiments.

Well, I found out about it when my nightly "make index" produced a
shower of errors. I found the relevant commit, worked out how to
clean up and moved on. I didn't speak up because I didn't think it
would help by then. portmaster made this mostly painless (though I'm
not sure if going from 5.10 to 5.14 has broken any of my scripts).

No objection to the bump of default version, and thanks for backing out
the removal of the older versions.

Who is going to take responsibility for adding back all the other
support for the older versions that was removed from the p5- (and
other?) ports?

Also, when that is being worked on, no need to worry about
dns/p5-Net-DNS, I have already taken care of it.

Do you have a list of ports that are now failing with the older version of
perl?

I may have missed something, but I didn't see that much commit regarding re=
moval
of compatibility code.
