The GENERIC kernel doesn't have ATAPI support by default.  You'll have to 
recompile the kernel with the atapi options.  Full instructions for 
recompiling are at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook.html (?) or in 
/usr/share/doc/handbook.  The options you want are in LINT.
