The usual advice I see here (which I follow myself) is to simply copy
any *lines* you wish to alter from /etc/defaults/rc.conf to
/etc/rc.conf and edit them there (that's what sysinstall does when,
for example, you use it to configure networking). This way your
/etc/rc.conf is a sort of personal diff file for /etc/defaults/rc.conf.
